Best of 2007

Best fillum that talked about the difficulty of growing up as a hermaphrodite in Uruguay:

XXY, Lucia Puenzo

Album of the year which is not called Autumn of the Seraphs:

Graduation, Kanye West

Best song to go to work in the morning : Good morning, Kanye West

Best song to come back from work at night: Is there a ghost, Band of horses.

Top 3 crap films Mademoiselle Red lured me into watching:
- The Prestige
- Elizabeth
- Atonement

Top 3 Mademoiselle Red’s posts:

- Liverpool-Marseille, Champion’s league: 0-1
- England-Croatia, Euro 2008 qualifier: 2-3
- Italy – France, Euro 2008 qualifier, 0-0: a fairly boring game but I was in San Siro with Don J, Geo Boun and Alexmar. Priceless.

Top 2 compliments I received:

- every morning as i’m getting ready to go to work, a half-asleep Mademoiselle Red whispers to me that I am “so handsome”. I know that she hasn’t even opened her eyes just to make sure I was really that handsome but it makes my day all the same.

- A student of mine compared my 8 o’clock monday morning class to the warm croissant you grab at 6 am on the way home from a club.

Top 2 major boxes ticked:

- Venice
- Picasso’s Guernica
Been there, seen that.

Piece of art that makes you proud to be French in a very good and very international exhibition:

Prenez soin de vous, Sophie Calle, Venice Biennale

In 2007 I also liked random things like:

- walking in the streets of Rome with Mademoiselle Red and looking at the people stunned by her beauty.
- turning 35.
- going to bed early to watch House, comfortably wrapped in the duvet.
- Lunch every Thursday with Don J and Geo Boun
- Not being in France for the presidential elections.
- Facebook
- Making a gazillion plans that will never come to life
- The Roman Autumn.
- Getting rid off clothes because they were so 2006.
- Writing this blog.

Top 4 things I am looking forward to in 2008:
- Moving to a new country in August

- France winning the European championship, with a Benzema treble during the final against a humiliated and powerless Italian team. At the end of the game, Gattuso declares: No team has ever played better. Materazzi takes his own life.

- A new pope. Let’s face it this one is boring. Even I, who live in Rome, hardly ever hear of him.

- A sex video on Youtube featuring my president and his new girlfriend, Carla Bruni. Remember when this actually happens: you read it here first.

XXY, Lucia Puenzo

Meilleur album de l’année qui ne s’appelle pas Autumn of the Seraphs :

Graduation, Kanye West

Meilleure chanson pour rentrer du boulot le soir : Is there a ghost, Band of horses.

- The Prestige
- Elizabeth
- Atonement

Les 3 meilleurs posts de Mademoiselle Red.

- Liverpool-Marseille, Champion’s league: 0-1
- England-Croatia, qualificatifs Euro 2008: 2-3

Turkish highlight

I was in Istanbul last week. Here are a few things that I remember.

Being woken up at 5:30 am by the melodious but rather firm voice of the imam next door who calls me – the sinner – to come and pray.

Crossing the Bosphore on a ferry. Looking at the beauty of the city in front of us. And occasionally getting shat on by a seagull.

Listening to Geo Boun’s masterclass on globalization and being happy to see him so happy.

Hagia Sophia in the rain.

Trying something new on the menu everyday and always ending up with seemingly the same kebab.

Drinking tea in every circumstance and at every hour of the day.

The Blue Mosque in the rain.

Getting mad at Turkish keyboards, especially the very deceptive i
without a dot. http://www.gmaıl.com/.

Having endless conversations with Geo Boun at the bar of the hotel.

Tying to remember how to say thank you in Turkish. Teşekkürler.

Watching snooker on Europsort in the middle of the night because it’s hard to fall asleep without Mademoiselle Red next to me.

Me, in the rain.

Lost in translation

Lost in translation

It would have been a good title for my upcoming post about my trip to Istanbul, but I guess I will have to find another one.

It's just that I found out today on Youtube what it is that Bill Murray whispers in Scarlett Johansson's ear (remember that time when she was not excruciatingly annoying ?) in the last scene of the film.

It is like hearing a secret, something you have died to know for ages. And then someone lets it slip and the magic is gone.

Suddenly it's like it doesn't belong to you anymore.

That's the secret about secrets, they'd better stay untold.

cailìn eirennach

On her Thursday post, Mademoiselle Red seriously annoyed me by pointing out the problem of going out with a Frenchman. Since then i've been looking for sharp, incisive arguments to retaliate but i must say i am at a loss. The truth is, I have no problem at all going out with an Irish lady. And not only that but i can also see quite a few advantages. So here we go, the 10 best reasons for a Frenchman to go out with an Irish lady:

- On the world coolometer, Ireland ranks pretty high, which indirectly makes me pretty cool too. ("i'm French" - "i see" - But my girlfriend is from Ireland" - "Awesome!!!")

- No matter what sport Mademoiselle Red and I watch together, the French team is always better. It feels great.

- Compared to her, I always look dark and tanned on the pictures.

- I am aware of the existence of Bertie Ahern , which is a plus if, i don't know, someone cared to ask.

- I don't know about other Irish girls but Mademoiselle Red sometimes wears that ridiculously cute shirt that says Not only am i perfect but i am Irish too. It makes me horny every time, what can i say ?

- I get to laugh every time she is asked if she is a catholic or a protestant, or alternately if she is from the South or the North of Dublin.

- I have already seen/read all the French classics that she spends hours reading/watching now, and it makes me look super smart.

- I am treated like royalty in every pub we go to.

- I could technically go on holidays to Wexford. That's if i really wanted to.

- I get to see the priceless look on her face every time an American proudly tells her : "Hey I'm Irish too!"

No strike no fun

I decided this morning, to keep myself busy - i'm on strike, like the rest of France - to spend some time doing one of the things i like most in life: staring at my defrosting fridge.

And it was well worth it.

Size matters

Some good news at last.

I find on my computer less and less messages to enlarge my penis.

And it's just as well because i've been working out.

Diary of a blogger

Not satisfied by his last two posts, the Major decided to write something good today. Something deep. He relates this quest for beauty in the following running diary.

1.28: So, something good.
1.41: Something deep.
1.45: Right.
1.47: I’m gonna make myself a little tea, a vanilla tea, i like that a lot, vanilla tea.
1.55: I don’t know, i could write something about mint ice cream, eating an ice cream, watching people go by, that’s good... Here i am, i’m eating a mint ice cream, people go by....
2.09: No, wait, i need to write something like the courgette post. It was good the courgette thing, people liked it, i had a lot of comments, people event sent some recipes...
2.20: Fuck, Major, wake up!
2.24: Yes, that’s it, i’m going to write about ... something about.... hold on, yeah....
2.36: What’s the Spanish for aubergine again ?
2.38: Ok, here you go, Mademoiselle red’s brother ran the Dublin marathon in 2 hours and 46 minutes, which is pretty fast for a big man.
2.39: No, that’s too much of a private joke.
2.40: Hold on, i went to see the last Coppola filum, 2 hours and 4 torturous minutes , i couldn’t finish, it’s a bit like my own marathon....
2.41: Right.
2.45: Relax, Major. Think of something you like to do. Breakfasts, i like them, reading the paper, hold on i’m onto something there, reading the paper over breakfast....
2.53: Or else, the love measuring machine worked pretty well too. I could invent another machine... a machine that would....
2.59: Ok, what did i watch last night?
3.02: Shit, that’s Mademoiselle Red’s favourite column.
3:07: FUUUUCK!
3:12 Right, i stop at 3.30. I like to work under pressure, deadlines and all that shit.
3:21 Ok, so, Rome...it’s raining...freezing cold...winter coming...global warming not that bad after all...
3.28: NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
3:30: Ok, ok, got it, a little confession, something i really wanted to say:

Mademoiselle Red is so beautiful that sometimes i wake up at night to watch her sleep.

Ain't that ridiculous ?

I read today that some bloggers could earn up to 10 000 euros a month thanks to the ads appearing on their site.

I just couldn’t resist.

Some day some dude will call me dad

Mademoiselle Red wants to have children.

She told me yesterday just after breakfast, because after all that’s the kind of thing you can tell whenever you want to, there is no rule.

Not fully awake yet, it took me a few seconds to realise that what she really meant was that she wanted kids with me.

And well, it made me very happy.

Worth a Peru

Getting old, I have noted, means both losing your hair and your friends.

Don J, a friend of mine, informed me this afternoon that he was moving to Lima, Peru where his wife found a teaching position in a local University.
Tonight, i feel a bit balder than usual.

Fascinating fact

I noticed this morning that i could say, not even under duress, the word courgette in 4 different languages.

I thought, Major, really, what an exciting life.

Venice

Last Friday, Mademoiselle Red took me to Venice. I waited all week end but nothing happened. Once again Mademoiselle Red didn't ask me to marry her.

Venise

Vendredi dernier Mademoiselle Red m'a emmené à Venise.

I try to stay away from it. I try not to notice it on the bedside table (which in my appartment happens to be the table). I hid it underneath a pile of books. I have other novels to finish first. Papers to mark. A thesis to write. But i can feel its presence anyway.
If i start reading it, i’m done.
Nothing else will matter.
I’ve bought a Connelly novel again and i shouldn’t have.

Erratum

Due to technical difficulties the last part of the post "A trip to France" could not be published, which made the post impossible to understand. Here is what you should have read:

"But most of all, i missed Mademoiselle Red so much."

Erratum

Anterior cruciate ligaments

One crispy Saturday morning in Philadelphia, 6 years ago, i played the least important game in the history of football. In front of zero spectators but under a magnificent blue sky, i decided, to spice things up a bit, to tear my knee ligaments.

Well, that hurts.

A trip to France

I saw Gus Van Sants’s Paranoid Park. It was a thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock and the cinema was full of people. Old people, young people, white people, black people. I loved the film very much.

I went to a massive fair where i drank some marvelous and totally unaffordable wines.

I went to the biennnale of contemporary art but it wasn’t very good. For instance, there was this installation in which you just had to wander around a few rooms with headphones on your head. The headphones were equipped with sensors and each time you entered a room you could hear a meaningful song. I suddenly found myself in front a large mirror. “You’re beautiful” James Blunt informed me.
Right.

I saw my mum in a play. I thought she was very convincing and that she also looked very good on stage. But then again i may not be very objective.

I went to a hospital but Dr Grey wasn’t avalaible.

You’re beautiful, m’a susurré James Blunt.
D’accord.

The gaucho's rhetoric

Along all those years i've spent mostly losing my hair, i've had my fair share of questions. Stupid questions that call for even dumber answers. Personal questions that make you blush. The 1 million dollars question.
But of all these questions, my favourite remains this one:

"Would you still love me if i bought a Dior bag ?"

A blogger's loneliness

Everyday, on my way home, it’s the same thing. What if people had left a comment ?
But they haven’t.
People, i like to think, have better things to do.

Laissez moi tranquille maintenant.

Sérieux.

Neutral as an Irishman

Following my post on Israel being my new favourite country in the world, I found that a lot of Palestinians have angrily visited my blog. Thank God in the meantime i managed to put the final touch to my love measuring machine and i can now safely annouce to the world that i love Palestine just as much as i love Israel (41-41 was the actual score)

Guys, you're both great. Really.

You can leave me alone now.

Seriously.

The love measuring machine

Her : Do you love me ?
Me: Yes
Her: How much ?
Me: More than you love me.
Her: I don’t believe you.

4 years and 9 months that we’ve been having this conversation. To prove her once and for all that i love her more than she loves me, i decided to invent a love measuring machine. Once i was done, i just had to feed it with the following data:
- age (i’m older than her)
- height (i’m taller than her. I am.)
- weight (i’m heavier than her.)
- nationality (i’m French, she’s Irish. That says something.)
- hair (i’m almost bald and while she’s washing it, drying it, coloring it, brushing it, well that leaves me plenty of time to love her.)

The results were clearcut, I love her more by 182 to 143.
Conversation over.

La machine à mesurer l'amour

Elle : Tu m’aimes ?
Moi : Oui.

Merci.

My new favourite country

Israel is a country in Southwest Asia located on the Southeastern edge of the Mediterranean Sea. Israel is the world’s only Jewish state. Jerusalem is the nation’s capital, seat of government and largest city. Unlike most countries in the Middle East, Israel is considered a liberal democracy. Since 1948, when it declared its independance, Israel has been in conflict with many of the neigbouring Arab countries.
Yesterday, Google statistics informed me that my blog had been viewed once – yes, that’s it - and that my visitor (i like to think that she is a young and attractive girl) lived in Israel. Of course, she stayed on my blog for only 0 second, but still, i wanted to thank her very much for coming.

Baseball

Baseball is a bit like a Western. First a tall guy arrives with a hat. He faces another tall guy with a hat. The second tall guy with a hat wants to go home, you can feel it, you can smell it. But the first tall guy with a hat doesn’t want him to. Not that he’s a bad guy or anything, but that’s his job. The two hardly look at each other, they are ready. The game is underway now. In Los Angeles, Atlanta or New-York, the sun goes down. On the other side of the planet, a major falls asleep.

The little café downstairs is run by a witch

Who rips off the tourists and kicks away the little Romanian girls who come to beg.

Who smokes cigarette after cigarette but whom even cancer stays clear of.

Who raised a child whose ring tone is Aerosmith’s I don’t want to miss a thing.

Boxes

A few days ago, Mademoiselle Red went to Ikea to buy a couple of boxes. Since then our flat reminds me of this Rachel Whiteread work we saw together at the Tate Modern .

Back to school

This year, for the first time, my mother won’t come. I told her that’s enough, i’m a big boy now. She was a bit disappointed of course, but i think she was quite proud too.
So i’ll walk to school alone and fearlessly, a briefcase in my hand – in my briefcase, a pencase, in this pencase, a red pen, in this red pen, the right or the wrong. My new shoes will probably hurt a little.
All my friends will be there. We’ll ask did you hear ? Did you know ?
Then the bell will ring, louder than our voices, louder even than the smell of coffee.
Downstairs, my classroom, my students. There will be thirty of them, aged 14 or 15 and the miracle will take place: i’ll start speaking and they’ll listen.

Summer ending

I fought so hard that my fists started bleeding, i knocked at every door, i cried so heavily that i ran out of tears, i left no stone unturned, but in the end there was nothing i could do, here came September.
